Introduction to the Portfolio

In this portfolio, there is a sample of just about everything that I did this year. This year, I realised that the two things that I'm best at are any activities involving crafts such as posters and Band since it's my favourite subject. The two that I should improve on are computer assignments and homework. Since there is only approximately 6 weeks of school left, I have made a goal for myself that I will try my best to acheive. My goal is to study my notes in all my subjects and get the highest mark I can in each subject on my exams.

My Subjects

Math

Term 1 Reflection

When Term 1 began, I found math boring and quite confusing but, towards the end of the term, I started to really enjoy Math class. The first unit we focused on during the first term was rate, ratio, and proportional reasoning. This wasn’t very difficult for me but it definitely was a bit of a bore. The class I’m in first began with rate, worked our way to ratio, and finally learnt about proportional reasoning. The whole class then ended this unit with a video project where you had to create a video with rate, ratio, and proportional reasoning.

GRADE EIGHT STUDENT ASSIGNMENT- PORTFOLIO REFLECTION TASK/INTENT/CRITERIA Throughout the year I have completed assignments based on Assessment for Learning practices. The learning process has followed the three key components:
Subject: Language Arts
TASK: What was I asked to do for this assignment?
I needed to reflect on the first chapter of Iqbal and write paragraphs about the examples, purpose, key lines, organisational features, my relate, and my evaluation.

INTENT: Why am I completing this assignment?
I had to write an EXPLORE for Iqbal chapter 1 so that I can practice organising my ideas. It also shows that I can understand what I just read and can relate to it and ask questions. I can also think about the author's and my purpose and find key parts of the story. I can also practice the writing process.

CRITERIA: How do I know what I needed to do to be successful in completing this assignment?
- filled out an organiser
- a paragraph for each part of EXPLORE
- used the writing process
- gave examples from text to support ideas
- gave examples from real life
- explained all ideas
- underlined statements
- highlighted explanations and examples
- underlined title of books

NEXT STEPS:
I can now give specific examples and explanations to support my ideas
I can now organise my ideas
I can now write a piece using the writing process
I can now relate to what I read
I can now find key parts of a text
I can now evaluate a text by asking questions and making connections
I can now think about the author's purpose and my purpose

GRADE EIGHT STUDENT ASSIGNMENT- PORTFOLIO REFLECTION
TASK/INTENT/CRITERIA
Throughout the year I have completed assignments based on Assessment for Learning practices. The learning process has followed the three key components:
Subject: Language Arts

TASK: What was I asked to do for this assignment?
I had to make a definition card with a definition and example of a simile.

INTENT: Why am I completing this assignment?
There are a few reasons why I made this definition card. One reason was to show I could understand what a simile is by creating my own example and drawing an image that matches. Another reason why I made the card was to show that I
can use a picture to portray my ideas. The card also helped me remember the definition of a simile by acting as a study card.
CRITERIA: How do I know what I needed to do to be successful in completing this assignment?
- have the definition of a simile
- have a well thought out original example of a simile
- drew a picture that matches my example
- colored with appropriate colours

NEXT STEPS:
I can now identify a simile in a text.
I can now create my own simile by comparing one object to another.
I now have a card with the definition of a simile that I can use to study.

GRADE EIGHT STUDENT ASSIGNMENT- PORTFOLIO REFLECTION
TASK/INTENT/CRITERIA
Throughout the year I have completed assignments based on Assessment for Learning practices. The learning process has followed the three key components:
Subject: Social Studies

TASK: What was I asked to do for this assignment?
I was required to think about my cuneiform and write a reflection on it.

INTENT: Why am I completing this assignment?
There are many reasons why I had to create a reflection. A reason why I had to create a reflection is so that I can think about what I did a good job on and what I should improve. I also had to reflect on my cuneiform so that I could give myself a mark. The reflection also helped me think about what I enjoyed about making my cuneiform and what I found difficult.

CRITERIA: How do I know what I needed to do to be successful in completing this assignment?
- gave myself a mark out of 10
- filled out the checklist
- explained why I gave myself that mark
- wrote about what I enjoyed about making my cuneiform
- explain what I found difficult
- stated what I would do differently next time
- gave specific details to support myself

NEXT STEPS:
I can now give specific details as to why i did something.
I can now explain why I gave myself a mark.
I can now explain how I felt while doing something.
I can now think about what I have done and write a reflection on it.

2 Minutes to Make a Difference

For 2 Minutes to make a Difference, I'm researching Child Soldiers in Uganda. The two big questions that My group have decided to focus on are---. The thing my group has been focusing are the LRA (Lords Resistance Army) which is a group that is known for kidnapping children and using them as soldiers. We're focusing on that group because it is group set in Uganda which is the place I'm doing a project on. Right now on my project, I'm still at the part where we're looking for pictures and music. This project is going to be due on the 20th of May which is in about 3 weeks.
